Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate is used to treat hyperkalemia (high levels of potassium in the blood). It is not used for the emergency treatment of life-threatening hyperkalemia because it takes some time to work. Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate is in a class of medications called potassium removing agents. It works by removing excess potassium from the body.

Dosage Of Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate

Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate comes as a powder in a packet to mix with water and take by mouth with or without food. When starting treatment with sodium zirconium cyclosilicate, it should be taken three times a day for up to 48 hours. After that, it is usually taken once a day or once every other day. Take sodium zirconium cyclosilicate at around the same time every day, or every other day, depending on your response to the medication. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take it exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Take any other medications at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take sodium zirconium cyclosilicate because it can interfere with the absorption of other medications.

You will need to mix the powder with water right before you take it. To mix the powder, follow these steps:

  • Empty the packet(s) of sodium zirconium cyclosilicate powder into a cup of 3 tablespoons (45 mL) or more of water.
  • Stir and drink immediately.
  • If any powder remains in the cup, add more water, then stir and drink.
  • Repeat as needed until no powder remains to be sure you received the full dose.
  • Your doctor may increase your dose, but not more than once every 7 days, depending on the results of your laboratory tests.

Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order certain lab tests to check your body’s response to sodium zirconium cyclosilicate.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.
