Overview

An uncircumcised penis has its foreskin intact.

Special care is not needed for an infant boy with an uncircumcised penis. Bathing normally is enough to keep the penis clean.

Pulling back the foreskin during cleaning in children may cause injuries and may make it painful to pull it back later in life.

Teenage boys should be taught to clean the uncircumcised penis by gently retracting the foreskin. The foreskin must be repositioned back over the head of the penis after cleaning.

If this is not done, the foreskin may slightly squeeze the head of the penis, causing swelling and pain (paraphimosis).

Medical care will be required if swelling and pain occur.
